I gather a few of you are running your own web development business which is something I'd love to do. I'm currently employed as a website developer but would like to start working on small projects in my spare time. However, I'm useless when it comes to business and I'm finding it really hard to understand what I need to do in order to do this (VAT registration? Tax declaration? Insurance?). I have read lots of docs on the subject but they are usually aimed at people who are starting their own "traditional business" i.e. applying for a loan, acquiring a premises, employing people and so on. To be quite honest I get lots amidst this flood of information.

Would anyone with experience be so kind as to explain the basics I need? All I want is to be able to have design a few websites for a few clients by myself but I want to make sure it's all above board. It needn't be detailed as I can research it later but even being pointed in the right direction would be a great help!

Hi folks,

I was wondering whether anyone could help with unix sys-admin issues, more specifically with load testing (Siege or similar). Or could recommend anyone.

I am looking to load test (using Siege or any other recommended tools) to WordPress website. One twists is that all but one of the pages is behind a login screen, so that needs to be successfully accessed.

I have followed a couple of tutorials online to install Siege on a dedicated server I have access to, but I access the program now (??) and I can't find any good tutorials again!

Hello Multipackers

I'm looking for feedback for a site I am doing for a charity based in Birmingham.

The link to the site is here.

Though I have experience in CSS and HTML this was mainly with table layouts and I wanted to do a project using CSS and HTML 'properly' (more semantics!)

The css file structure and styling in general is based on Simon Collison's book "Beginning CSS Development", which I bought after seeing his talk at Geek In The Park last year.

Feedback from the client is good but the final pages have yet to be produced so I thought it was a good time to see what others thought...

Things I am unhappy with...

There are a few things I know need more work:

The beach image is low quality and will be improved when the new site is complete

*The "I am a" divider will either be dropped or styled more.

*I am unhappy with how the logo (id=logo) is positioned . I am not sure how I can align it with the bottom right of the "welcome" div.

*The JQuery I know can be applied to a class for the mouseover/mouseout but haven't properly gone through this.

*I'm a developer not a designer and I know the site will look better with some nice graphics that will server as "Call to actions", which I am hoping to do as I add each page.

*I was thinking of adapting this design to work with the 960 grid CSS and wondered if anyone had any opinions on this as well?

Thanks for your time, any comments- good, bad and ugly are welcome.

Cheers

Alex Graham

Hi, I need some help/advice with regards toP HP frameworks. I spoke to Paul Rhodes and someone else(sorry, forgot your name!) at the April meet who recommended a number of frameworks to help rewrite two systems I look after that basically do the same business things (more detail at http://lalexgraham.wordpress.com/2010/05/12/php-v-net-whats-the-best-for-me) and I'm guessing theres something out there (be it addons to codeigniter, cakePHP or a dedicated business framework such as phpOpenBiz) thats already got the bulk of what I need to kick start the development. Whats your opinions on frameworks and/or are there any php forums that you can recommend I post to? Cheers

To overcome this I have worked with a developer friend to produce a script which allows sensible line heights for headings and yet allows the paragraphs to step to a beat.

At the risk of turning this forum into a job board...

I'm looking for a PHP / MySQL developer to join http://www.edleadesign.com . I work on both client projects and self-commission projects / web apps. Yes, currently it's a one-person-company! This is for a permanent position in UK near Leamington Spa / Coventry.

For client projects, knowledge of PHP MVC frameworks and RAD is essential. You will be working with frameworks such as Seagull, Zend, CodeIgnitor, Drupal, Wordpress and many others. Your role will be server-side development focused and you will work with other front end developers who will create javascript/html/css. Although your primary focus will be back-end development, a good knowledge of html/css/javascript will be beneficial and in all likelihood you will be comfortable with these languages.

Internally commissioned projects are a little more experimental. There are currently two active sites:

http://www.artflock.com
http://www.soopsee.com

They integrate with APIs from sites like Facebook, Twitter, Flickr etc so you will need to have experience with using APIs and preferably oAuth.

Most of your time will be spent coding PHP (5) and MySQL that will be delivered to thousands of people so good understanding of caching and performance techniques will be preferable. Linux/sys admin/apache configuration skill a big plus.

For this role I am looking for someone with a passion for web development and programing, you do not need a huge amount of experience but you have to be interested in experimenting with code and familiar with the latest trends and techniques.

+++ The Job
• Full Time with immediate start if possible. Hello all,

I would like to propose a Multipack hack day, for the February meet. This has been proposed a number of times, as has the notion of using it to create something in support of the a.green:focus campaign (which frankly died soon after I announced my intentions last year).

Ideally it would be good to work on something that can launch before SXSW to dissuade attendees from picking up the infamous big bags (and lobby for them not being part of the 2011 festival). I have a few ideas, and I think there are perhaps a number of interesting directions we could go on this.

There are also perhaps some longer term projects in this arena we could explore (I know Matt Machell had some good ideas and Ant is working on a green themed iPhone app). There's certainly no shortage of interest amongst the group, which is encouraging!

Is anyone interested in a hack day, and one with this focus? Would One Black Bear be able to offer their offices up over the weekend? Would it make sense to run this over two days?

As to a date, the second weekend of February coincides with valentines day, so I would suggest either the first or third week in February. However, the later date would mean less time to launch/promote anything that would relate to SXSW which begins March 12th.

Looking forward to your feedback!

Paul

Hi All,

Have we started discussing arrangements for this years Christmas meal yet? I know you need to get in early if you're thinking of booking a table somewhere, so we really should get the ball rolling.

I say this, as I would love to come this year (preferably at the start and not after everyone has finished their deserts!), but I'm out of the country after the 17th of December. So put me down for any date before then :-)

Hi ’pack, I’ve got what is probably a simple process but there is so much link rot and treacle when it comes to Flash tutorials etc I’m having difficulty finding any examples.

I need to implement an audio player into a swf file similar in functionality to the header banner here http://www.olympiahorseshow.com/ (please wait for the animation to load).

I’m guessing this is done via Actionscript but being a complete Flash novice I’m not entirely sure.

Does anyone have any ideas how its implemented and can point to a tutorial online?

Hi all, was waiting for one of the usual suspects to start this, but in their absence - I'll kick off.

As has been mentioned here, and elsewhere - I'm keen to offer my insight and share my experience of working with MS Silverlight over the last year or two.

Matt made the excellent suggestion of inviting others to speak from the similar but different viewpoints of Flash and perhaps HTML 5 - to get a braod spectrum overview of alternative RIA technologies. This also ties things up in a nice themed ribbon...

What are people's thoughts on the above?

With regards other speakers, we should probably knock on the door of http://www.flashmidlands.com for the Flash/Flex point of view (I'm particularly interested to see what the new Catalyst framework has to offer), and I only know of one man with a sufficient grasp of HTML 5 and it's potential application in er... applications. Fresh from his FOWD talk on a similar topic - Mr Bruce Lawson?

that's my $0.02 anyway... discuss :) Oh, and as for a date - how about the 17th?
